I don't take my baby outside if its too windy because even I find it uncomfortable. If you have to just cover her up with a blanket.

It sounds like she's keeping her too warm. If you have the house a comfortable temp then just keep her in one full layer (like feet pajamas) and when she sleeps swaddle her (if she still likes that). When you go outside put her in one more layer (a jacket over it and socks and a beanie). This is all the baby needs.

Just give her a bath at night and you won't have to worry about taking her outside after having a bath.

How itchy the sweater will be if it's made with 70% wool material?

I'm making a sweater with Heart and Sole yarn (made specifically for knitting socks.) I chose the yarn because it's finer than other yarns and thought it'll be perfect for making baby/children's sweaters. I don't like the look of the chunky, thick and bulging sweaters that kids sometimes wear, and that was why I chose to knit with Heart and Sole... but it's 70% wool and 30% polyester, and now I'm worried that it might turn out to be really itchy. Has anyone made a sweater using Heart and Sole? How did it go? Do you recommend other brands of yarn that are as fine as Heart and Sole but made with softer material?
Thank you!

Heart and Sole makes great kid's sweaters. They wash well. I hang them to dry, so I can't say how they do in the dryer.

I have not found Heart and Sole--or any "sock" yarn--to be particularly itchy.

admin answers:

One of the easiest ones I have is to make the chain the desired length.....turn.....ch 2, in the 3rd stitich from the end 2 dc, chain 2, 1 sc in the same stitich.....continue that until the end of the chain....turn.... Repeat the pattern in the ch 2 space, continue until you have reached the size you want. Repeat pattern on the beginning end just one time, both ends will then look the same. Sometimes I go all the way around so all four sides look the same. Its very easy and its a warm one.

How do you crochet a baby blanket? Need help with instructions...?

I am trying to follow a pattern but I have no idea what it is asking me to do. I've started with my basic chain the next step is what I cannot figure out. The instructions say "shell in 6th ch from hook (first 5 skip chs count as a dc and 2 skip chs)." Any help would be helpful.

admin answers:

The instructions for the blanket start with the finished measurements, then a list of materials and hooks, then the gauge (GAUGE: 3 shell pats = 4”; 6 rows = 4”). Then there is a Note: and a Special Stitch: (NOTE: Shell pat consists o one dc and one shell. SPECIAL STITCH:Shell: Work 5 dc in the st indicated.)

Those three instructions are critical to your finished piece coming out the way you expect it to come out.

The Gauge note tells you how many of the pattern stitches are included in a 4" width of the blanket, and how many rows are included in 4" of length. Granted, matching the gauge exactly isn't as big a deal in a baby blanket as it would be in a garment. Still, if you are expecting it to be 30-12" x 41", you will not be happy if it comes out 24" x 32" or 40" x 50" (and you run out of yarn).

The Note note tells you what the pattern means when it says "Shell pat" (one shell plus one double crochet by itself).

The Special Stitch note tells you how to make a shell (Work 5 double crochets in a specific stitch).

To start the first row, you will make a "Shell pattern" (a shell and a dc). The instruction you asked about means, "Skip 5 chains, three of which will stand in for a double crochet and two of which will be the skipped chains. Then double crochet in the next stitch 5 times." Then it says "skip next 2 chs, dc in next ch;" which means "Skip the next two chains. In the following chain, make the one double crochet that separates the shells." You have now completed an edge stitch (the 5 chains at the beginning) and one shell pattern.

Next it says "* skip next 2 chs, shell in next ch, skip next 2chs, dc in next ch; repeat from * across,". What that means for you to do is skip the following two chains, then crochet five double-crochets in the next chain, then skip the next 2 chains, then crochet one double crochet in the next chain. You have now completed one single "Shell pat" and you are ready to complete the row with "Shell pats." Note the * (asterisk) at the beginning of the instruction. Then note the part of the instruction that says, "repeat from * across." The * begins a set of instructions that will be completed multiple times. It ends by telling you how many times to repeat the instruction. In this case, it says "across," which means for you to keep doing the same thing until you get to the end of the starting chain.

Depending on the quality of the items, usually baby items are priced between 25 cents and $2. Note: People who go to rummage sales are looking for deals, so your cheaper items will sell alot faster than your higher priced ones.
I would say www.magickidsusa.com

Its all brand name and 70% below retail price. Just clicked on the newborn clothing section... Looks to be 81 different products available, hope that's enough variety. This site is simple and straight forward in it's navigation, not as "bulky" as the other sites. If you purchase from them make sure to use the discount code MK56955 for the best possible discount.

Is it weird to get baby things if you aren't pregnant or married?

I'm 17 and I do not plan on having children until I am married and that will be at least a few years from now, but I can't help thinking about it. The only thing that I really want for my life is to be a wife and a mother. Right now I am attending college to become an elementary school teacher which is something else that I want to do with my life. I am always working with kids, I have a job in a daycare, and i have a bunch of nieces and nephews that I take care of all the time. I'm just really excited for that step in my life, even though its a ways away.

So last week I was at a bazaar with some friends when I saw the cutest hand knitted booties. They were a soft blue so I thought about getting them for my sister in law, who is expecting a boy, but I felt like keeping them. I didn't end up getting them but it made me think of the idea of a hope chest, which I think would be a fun thing to do. Ironically enough, later that day I bought an apron and the lady suggested I save it for my hope chest. I hadn't thought of one until that day.

So I was thinking of using a picture box to start and slowly fill it with little baby things. Of course I won't go nuts but maybe here and there I will see something special.

Do you think this is ok? Am I weird to think like this? Sorry for the long ramble, but I was just thinking. Thanks for taking the time to answer.

No reason not to plan for the future! Women used to keep hope chests, in which they'd place things they would need when married and having children. Dish sets, linens, baby clothes, receiving blankets, etc. I like the idea and wouldn't really think you weird to do something like this.

Kntting help: I knitted a whole row backwards. How to fix it?

I am a beginning knitter (I just started yesterday!), and I am knitting a scarf using 10 mm, 15 US needles and Red Heart brand yarn in "Baby Clouds" style, which is loose and fuzzy. The color is Pastels, which I'm sure doesn't really matter. It is labeled super bulky. The needles do go with the yarn. The yarn is knitted with 18 loops across. I was knitting a row, and when I finished that same row, I realized I knitted it backwards, having done the purl stitch when I should've done the knit stitch. Please help!!! How do I undo this? Videos, links, and self-knowledge will be acknowledged! Full stars to the best answer!!!
Also, how do I place it back on the needle? I"m sorry, I'm new to this...

Here are links to a couple of videos showing how to 'un-knit' that allows you to reverse the mistake without dropping stitches, and you end up correctly positioned to continue correctly from that point on, because it's VERY important that you have the loops turned the proper direction to work the pattern right. Hope it helps!

Try ebay.
Any yarn which gives the same tension can be used. A hooded towel doesn't have to fit so the tension isn't critical anyway.
Cotton yarn does tend to be expensive though and because of the low yardage you need more weight than if you used other fibres.

Having trouble reading the knitting instructions...?

Weave yarn through remaining sts, draw up tightly and fasten securely . Sew back seam.(* = repeat whatever follow the * as indicated; sts = stiches; rep = repeat)"
I dont get it, does it tell me to only decrease only one row or keep decreason rows until there's only one purl stich left? Or do I alternate each row knitting and purlling while decreasing? What do I do after that?

admin answers:

Assuming you have 23 sts on your needle then, on this row you p2tog for 11 times (takes up 22 sts and will leave you 1 st at the end), now purl the last st.

Now cut the yarn leaving enough yarn to sew up the seam. Thread this yarn on a blunt wool sewing needle and thread it through the stitches on your knitting needle and pull them up tight and fasten it off securely.

Now sew up the back seam and weave in all the loose ends.

Circular are more versatile, so I find them a lot better to have than a whole set of others. All you need are long circs and you can do anything you want, including socks, fingers on gloves, sweaters, afghans.

Circs are easier to use for sweaters because you don't have all that weight hanging off the one needle, and making your arms sore. You can do flat or round knitting with circs... There is no law saying you MUST only do circular knitting with circs! Knitting is just working one stitch at a time with two pointed sticks. What they have in the middle doesn't matter.

I have often charted my own monograms, etc. The trick is to find knit graph paper. Cross stitch charts and common graph paper are squares, knit stitches are rectangular (short and wide.) If you use a cross stitch chart, it will look like somebody squashed your design down, unless you repeat 1 row for every inch of your design. Knit graph paper accounts for this and is very easy to use. You can even use your own computer fonts and printer to print out a real size template, underlay it on the graph paper and chart the squares. Places that sell knitting machine supplies usually will have knit graph paper.

Please help me understand! When friends have babies, I lose my friend. What do I do?

I'm 26, which I guess makes me the age at which people start having babies. I hate to admit it, but it makes me sad when a friend tells me she's pregnant, because I know that she is about to disappear into being a mom and I will lose a friend.

I try hard to be supportive, throwing showers, knitting baby sweaters, etc, but it's hard. The list of people I have to lean on in my own life is growing smaller and smaller, and I feel so alone. I've joined clubs and groups, but the superficial friendships I make there just can't compare to the life-long relationships I'm losing.

I know that most people have children and I shouldn't begrudge them, but I can't help it. Why do these women keep choosing to throw away our friendships in favor of having children? Why am I so easily set aside?
I don't ever plan to have children of my own - I just don't feel called to parenthood. Not do I think it's a good reason to have kids, just to keep up with your friends.

That's not what they are doing at all! They still need you as a friend. Trust me!

When you have a child, you whole life changes. You see the world differently, and you have different priorities.

You have to understand, that your friends children come first now, and you need to be supportive of their new life choice.

Yes, you may not see them as much, but you can still call them up for walks, lunches, and maybe a girls night out. But honestly, that's all they will probably be able to do, because children are a 24/7 job.

Life changes, and you have to be willing to change with it. Your friends still need your friendship, and still love you, but they have someone else they are responsible for.

Have you thought about settling down? I find that my friends who are single, and childless, I have nothing in common with anymore. Maybe they feel the same way. Friends come and go, husbands and children lasts forever.

Good luck and don't be sad about it anymore. They still love you and need you. Also, don't rule out your new friends from clubs you said you were going to, because you can make a new best friend at any age.

Do people buy knitted items on sites like ebay?

Recently, I have started knitting as a hobby, and someone suggested to me that I sell my knitted items on ebay. I thought this was a pretty good idea, but I was just wondering if anybody has had luck trying to sell knitted stuff on ebay before. I was thinking of trying to sell knitted purses, scarves, baby or dog sweaters and blankets, armwarmers, and maybe regular size sweaters and blankets. So, do you think there would be demand online for these things? And if not, is there any other place I could try to sell them?

admin answers:

People do buy them, if the prices are reasonable--many people think handknit items should cost no more than something they can buy at a local mass merchandise store (X-Mart), but you need to price your work at at least 3 times the cost of the materials used. That said, anything hand-made that you offer for sale must be from a pattern of your own design, not a published pattern that you've changed slightly by using a different color or pattern, to avoid being sued for copyright infringement.
